At approximately 12:40 a.m., police were called to a traffic crash on Kōloa Road, near the Puakenikeni Street intersection. Upon arriving to the scene, officers located a Nissan pickup truck with two occupants.
According to an on-scene police investigation, the Nissan pickup was heading west on Kōloa Road, when it apparently struck a rock wall and a utility pole along the westbound shoulder of the roadway. The impact of the crash severed the utility pole and caused the truck to flip over.

A second truck involved in the crash was also headed west, when the 18-year-old female driver apparently lost control of the vehicle and drove off a cliff along the eastbound shoulder of Kōloa Road. The Toyota pickup crashed into a storage warehouse at Lāwa‘i Cannery Self Storage.
The front passenger of the Toyota pickup, a 15-year-old male of Makaweli, was ejected from the vehicle during the crash and died at the scene. His name will not be released by police because he is a minor.
Another male passenger, age 16, of Kekaha, was transported to Wilcox Hospital with non-life threatening injuries. The third passenger in the Toyota, an 18-year-old Kekaha female, was initially transported to Wilcox Hospital but has since been medevaced to Queen’s Hospital.
Police have identified the female driver of the Toyota truck as Keisha Shimatsu, age 18, of Kekaha. Shimatsu was transported to Wilcox Hospital and released with minor injuries. She was then arrested for first-degree negligent homicide and two counts of first-degree negligent injury. Shimatsu was Released Pending Investigation.
Kōloa Road was closed from 12:40 a.m. to 5:40 a.m. while KPD’s Traffic Safety Section conducted an on-scene investigation.
Speed and alcohol appear to be factors in the crash. The police investigation remains ongoing.
This is Kaua‘i’s seventh traffic fatality of 2016.
