Making new friends isn't always easy, but here are some ways to break the ice.
Next time you're at a gathering, look for an approachable person. In a room full of many, you're bound to see at least one person standing alone.
Find common ground. Ask how she knows the host, or ask about her family.
Be a good listener. People are most comfortable when talking about themselves, so be sure to ask open ended questions and then look interested in the answers.
Suggest lunch, but be sure to get a number or email so you can set a date. "Let's do lunch sometime" gets you nowhere.
